Lion of St Mark at the Doge’s palace

I’ve started reading history books about Venice. One of the books I was looking at talks of Venice as the first ‘corporate’ city — and although I believe the metaphor might be stretched, it is an intereesting observation that Venice sells itself through a couple of strong, iconic images. The first of these is the winged lion of St Mark - the ‘logo’ of Venice. This photo is the famous statue on a column in St Mark’s square, seen from the balcony of the Doge’s palace.

I’m still trying to find out why St Mark was “dogged” by a lion with wings. Can you tell me where I should look for that information? Must be a story in it somewhere — as with St Jerome’s lion.

    Hi,
I am in need of help myself. You might know or you might know of someone who knows. I have looked and looked and can not seem to find what I need. It is a long story why I must have it, But the Angel said “You will know the name when you see it” I had another vision early one morning….I know that sounds silly….but I don’t know what else to call it. A lion with wings…..There is a name that this lion is called, not a Sphinx, and it is not Greek. Do you know what this lion is called? I will know the name when I see it. Do you know what it is?
I am being very serious. If you know, or know where to look, Please get back to me.
    Thank you!

St. Mark is shown as a lion because of Revelations in the Bible. The visionary saw four creatures, one a lion, around the throne of God. These creatures are interpreted to represent the four Gospels. St. Mark’s Gospel begins as,” A voice calling out in the desert”, like a lion roaring. Thank you St. Mark.
